Sylvia Browne Goofs

Sylvia Browne is not the focus of this site, but sometimes things just need to be pointed out more than once. Especially if we'd rather ignore them and have faith in people who accept large sums of money to tell us about our deceased loved ones. In the last essay about Sylvia, we discovered that she accepts $200 for phone readings and $700 for in-person readings. Both types of readings last half an hour. She appears on the Montel Williams Show regularly. If you visit Montel's site ( http://www.montelshow.com/ ) you are given the option to receive Inspirational Life Messages from Sylvia Browne herself. For a mere $5.99 every four weeks, you receive a daily text message from Sylvia that reads like a lengthy fortune cookie. SAPS did not want to speak poorly of anything until reading the messages ourselves, so we've signed up for the service and will update daily in the SAPS News section of the site, located in the navigation bar to the left. Today's message reads: "Sylvia: Let your love grow everyday so when you walk through the darkness light falls off you and touches all." This nonsensical message no doubt sounds joyous, but the essential message can also be found in the Bible, for free:

Psalms 23:4
Yea, thou I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.

While searching for the source of Sylvia's knowledge, SAPS discovered another Sylvia faux pas video that has surfaced on YouTube. In this video, Sylvia claims that a couple's teenage daughter was shot and died.

Watch the video:

Sylvia Browne on Montel... Again

In the video, the parents ask Sylvia how their daughter died. It has been five years. The parents give no information beforehand about the circumstances surrounding their daughter's death. Sylvia immediately answers, "She was shot," leading to looks of complete confusion from the parents.

The parents clarify, at the urging of Montel, how their daughter collapsed in her room and died. An autopsy did not reveal the cause of death. It can probably be assumed that an autopsy would reveal a gunshot wound.

Sylvia then backpedals slightly, and says that it "looks like something hit the chest". Montel quickly gives examples of two teenage boys who were hit in the chest during baseball practice and died hours later. While this may be true, internet searches for "teenager" "baseball practice" "died" yield no results fitting the description of the circumstances. It is important to remember that even if the parents confirmed that their daughter had been hit in the chest hours before dying (which they did not) that is not what Sylvia claims to have seen. She said emphatically that their daughter was shot.

The mother tries to apply some circumstance that would allow Sylvia to still be correct. She asks if it could have been something with her daughter's heart, and Sylvia says yes. Again, even if later the parents discover that their daughter died of heart failure, Sylvia was still wrong. Heart failure is not the same as being shot, even if it can be applied to the same area.

Further watching the video, we can see how far Sylvia will go to make her statements seem correct. The father suggests Toxic Shock Syndrome, a bacterial infection that has been linked to tampon use, but can also appear after a strep throat infection and enter the body through an open wound. Though Toxic Shock Syndrome is a serious disease and requires immediate treatment, it does not involve the heart. It affects the kidneys and liver. Yet Sylvia says that this also is a possibility. Something that not only has nothing to do with being shot (though "shock" and "shot" can sound similar), but that also doesn't have anything to do with the chest area. If Toxic Shock Syndrome is a possible cause of the teenager's death, then it is only mentioned in any capacity by the parents, not by anything that Sylvia said or saw.

In light of Sylvia's recent claims, a new web site is being opened by a dear friend of SAPS. This web site focuses solely on Sylvia Browne and her claims. Check back frequently for updates as there are sure to be more mishaps in the future, and remember to stop by the SAPS News section daily for Sylvia's inspirational messages.
